Quick Week Ahead

Hopefully you were all able to enjoy having the kids home for an extra day this past weekend.  Not having school Monday will make this a very quick week as we try to squeeze everything in.

We will be doing a story in reading this week and along with that will be a spelling test.  Students should have Family Times and spelling words with them when they arrive at home this evening.  The reading test will still be on Thursday as normal and students will be introduced to the story on Wednesday.

Wednesday we will be doing some extended reading and writing times as well.

Thursday afternoon most of the students will be participating in our 2nd annual dodgeball tournament.  We will be going to Fuller Hall for about an hour to play a tournament with the winners playing against the 3rd grade teachers.  All students who did NOT receive an ODR in the month of February will be able to play.  Students who did receive an ODR will be going along to cheer on their classmates, but will not be participating.

The spelling words for this week are:  monster, surprise, hundred, complete, control, sample, instant, inspect, pilgrim, contrast, explode, district, address, substance, children, merchant, embrace, purchase, curtsy, contract.

There is math homework tonight, the directions are important to read carefully.

Busy Friday Ahead....

Tomorrow during our specials time we will be visiting the dome theater that is going to be set up in the gym.  This should be a great experience.  I expect everyone will be on their best behavior during this time as always. :)  We will also be visiting the Pre-K kids at PV for about a half hour to read to them.  We will be out of the building from about 9.55 - 10.35.

Tomorrow is also the end of the 2nd trimester.  It is unbelievable that after tomorrow there will only be 60 days of school left.

There is homework tonight.  It should be fairly simple for the kids.

Homework

I apologize for getting this up so late, but there IS homework tonight.  If you child didn't get a chance to do it remind them that they come into the room in the morning as soon as they get to school and finish it then.  Please try to send the homework with them even if it is blank.  It makes it much easier for them to complete it in the morning.

We will be taking our weekly reading test Thursday. This weeks story has been about Gertrude Ederle who was a woman who became famous by swimming the English Channel.

New Website...

I have added a new website to the links list at the right.  It is called Johnnie's Math Page. The kids worked on this during their ILS 2 time this morning and seemed to enjoy it.  It looks like it has some good practice for some of the things we are working on in math.

Poll

Please take 5 seconds to participate in the poll to the right.  It is anonymous.

No Homework

There will NOT be any homework for tonight.  (Tuesday)

Upcoming Events...

The end of the trimester will be this Friday.  It was moved back a day because of the snow day we had earlier.  Report cards will come home next week.

Friday we will be having a dome theater visit the school to show off some of the neat things that take place on our planet.  The dome will be set up in the gym and each class will get to visit for about 30 minutes.

Friday we are also going to try and visit some friends in Mrs. Bertran's and Miss Lane's Pre-K classes.  We have made it over to Pleasant View one other time this year and spent the time reading books with them.  If all works out we will be visiting them on Friday morning as well.  Both the 3rd graders and Pre-K students really enjoy this time.

Spelling Words

The spelling words are challenging this week, we didn't have anyone qualify to be tested over all 20 words so I am only posting 1-15.  Study this frequently throughout the week.  Notice all of the words have the ist, or, ess, or er ending.

dentist, editor, artist, hostess, actress, swimmer, seller, tutor, tourist, organist, lioness, shipper, chemist, investor, conductor

Monday News on Tuesday

I didn't get a chance to write about Monday yesterday so here it is on Tuesday.  Your student should have brought home the Family Times letter yesterday for our new reading story.  They also should have brought home a spelling worksheet to help them practice their spelling words.  I will post the spelling words on here later today.

Hopefully everyone had a chance to work on the Math HW and get it returned this morning.  Look for more updates later today.

Happy Friday!

We went over the last two selection tests that we have taken this morning.  Students should be bringing those home this afternoon.  They should also have the spelling test that we took today to bring home.

The math homework is to play Multiplication Bingo.  They have a sheet explaining the game.  Nothing needs to be returned to school on Monday.  This game is a great way to practice facts with your child.

It has been brought to my attention that the comments section doesn't work.  I will work on that.  You are able to comment at the bottom of each blog post however.  If you or your student wishes to do this you will have to become a member of the blog at the right.  It takes a google account or some other accounts are allowed also.

Have a great weekend!!

This morning we took our Selection Test over the story that we read this week, Rocks In His Head.  We had a lot of really great scores and the students did a great job.  We also had a really great class discussion to help us review for the test.  I have started holding discussions about the stories where the kids can ask questions but instead of me answering them another student needs to answer it.  We get into some really great discussions and I think it really helps them on their tests.

We started Unit 7 in math today.  The first lesson was short and we have already been working on multiplication so the kids did really well.  We actually went ahead and did another lesson and got through that also.  For this reason they have TWO sheets of homework tonight.  Both sheets need to be done and returned in the morning.

Remember if for whatever reason your child doesn't have the opportunity to kid their homework done at home they may do it in the morning in my room.  They can come right in when they get there and get it done.  If they need to eat breakfast at school have them eat quick and come down to the room to get it finished.  This works best if they can bring back the homework that was sent home with them.  That way I don't have to make extra copies in the morning for them which I don't always have time for.  If you have any questions about this procedure don't hesitate to ask.

Dental Health Month

Some of you may know already, but February is Dental Health month.  Today we had Juli Jaycox from Drs. Moriarty's office visit our class.  She spent a few minutes discussing with students why taking care of our teeth is important.  She also brought students toothbrushes that were donated by Drs. Moriarty's office.

We finished our Trimester 2 Math Test today.  Tomorrow we will be beginning Unit 7 in math.  Unit 7 puts a lot of emphasis on multiplication and division.  You should have already received a Unit 7 parent letter that introduces the unit.  Save those as they can be a big help when helping your student with homework.  Any practice that you can do with your student at home with their multiplication facts would be a huge advantage for them.

Tomorrow in reading we will be taking our Selection Test about the story Rocks In His Head.  Discussing the story with your child tonight may help them do better on the test.  They should also have a good understanding of the vocabulary words:  attic, board, chores, customer, labeled, spare, and stamps.

Remember if there is any other information that you would like to see included here I would love to know what it is.  I want this to be a great resource for you.  You can add any recommendations to the comment box or email them to me at abrim@webster-city.k12.ia.us.

Links

I have added a Links section over to the right.  I will be adding more links in the near future.  Most of them will be educational, but some of them may be more for fun.  If you or your kids have any websites that you would like to share post the link to the comments section and I might add it to the links section.  Sharing sites that we use is a great way to help others have new experiences.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

We had our Valentine's Party this afternoon and all of the kids did a great job.  Thank you to the parents for helping by sending the cards and candy.

We finished part one of our trimester math test today.  It took a while, but I have a feeling the kids did well on it.  We will be doing part two tomorrow.

Remember to study those spelling words.  Ask your child about the story Rocks In His Head.  See what they have to say about it!!

Spelling Practice

Students should bring home a spelling practice sheet today.  This doesn't have to be returned.  Students should also all have a Family Times sheet discussing our reading for the week.

The spelling words for the week are:  prepaid, midnight, overflow, outdoors, outline, overgrown, prefix, Midwest, pretest, midpoint, outgoing, overtime, overdue, outside, outfield.

Remember your student might only be responsible for the first 8 or the first 15 or all of them.  They will know Tuesday for sure.

No Homework

There will not be any homework until we are finished with the Trimester 2 Math Test.  You can expect homework on Thursday.

Trimester Math Test

Today in math we will be finishing our review for the 2nd trimester.  Tuesday we will take the first part of the trimester test which is a test over what was learned in the 1st trimester.  Wednesday we will do the second part which is a test of what was learned in the 2nd trimester.  These tests are what gives the students their report card grades.

Valentine's Day Party

On Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:00 we will be having a Valentine's Day party.  Kids may bring Valentines for their classmates.  I do ask that they bring one for everyone if they are going to bring any.  They don't have to bring any if they don't want.

Easier to update...

I am hoping that by creating blog that can easily be updated a little at a time that I will be able to keep it updated more often than the class webpage.  This will basically be for announcements and all of the links to games can be found in the same place as before.  I will also be adding the spelling words to this blog.  If everything works as well as I plan there may be daily announcements so check back often.
